gbdfed Bitmap Font Editor

The interestingly named gbdfed font editor lets you interactively create new bitmap font files or modify existing ones. It allows editing multiple fonts and multiple glyphs. It also allows cut and paste operations between fonts and glyphs and editing font properties. The editor works natively with BDF fonts and allows importing of  all common font types. gbdfed also supports creating and editing 2, 4, and 8 bits-per-pixel gray scale strikes that can be embedded in OTF fonts gbdfed requires GTK+ 2.6 or later to compile and run. This program has been built and tested briefly on Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5. It does not yet compile and run properly on Windows which limits its usefulness for most people.

Raster Font Editor

Raster Font Editor is an easy to use font editor for the creation of bitmap fonts. It supports several file formats and has a very simple yet fully customisable user interface. The application can open font resource files (*.fnt) created by other tools. It can import DOS 8x16 fonts, fonts from BMP images and can convert TTF fonts to raster fonts. This is a beta version and does not contain any help. It is fully working though and we trust you can use it and start creating fonts immediately.

BitFont Maker2 is a free online editor which allows you to easily create pixel based fonts. It allows you to download your created font as Truetype and you also can upload the personalized fonts of yours into the gallery. The website is really easy to use in all aspects. The website is great at what it does but creating pixel based fonts is a limited business so for that reason it's just a 3 star review.

So easy to use, it is your ideal package for entering into the world of font creation. Type light is free for personal and limited commercial use (if you classify yourself as a business, then you will need purchase Type 3.2 full version). So please read the license.

FontForge is free and open source font creation software. FontForge allows you to edit outline and bitmap fonts. You may create new ones or modify old ones. It is also a format converter and can interconvert between PostScript (ascii & binary Type1, some Type3, some Type0), TrueType, OpenType (Type2), CID, SVG. FontForge is available for download on several operating systems and is localized in several languages.

Fontstruct is also a great place to go because users who have created their own custom fonts often share them so everyone can download the finished product. The software is for both Windows OS and MacOS. And it supports major font formats like Multiple Naster,TrueType, Type 1, Open type and other formats. After closing the editing window, the new character will be automatically saved. One can repeat this operation for each desired character. At the end, he can save the modified font file in a wide range of formats.

FontArk is an excellent browser-based font editor and a tool for creating new fonts. You can import font templates or entirely create new fonts with FontArk. There are also some great in browser video tutorials which will help you to achieve a better results with FontArk. There is a useful outline generator which allows you to create a border around the letter. Later, you can edit the thickness and the curves of the individual letters. You can edit more than one letter at the same time. Then the finished font can be exported as an OTF file. You can try fontArk editor without a user account for a short time but for using all features one has to create an account and log in.You can either sign up via email or Facebook.

BirdFont is not only free, but also open source. The interface is divided into tabs on top, main area in the middle and a sidebar with tools which are grouped by functions. To create fonts, you can draw on the grid, import SVG icons to make an icon font, or draw letters by hand in another program (or even on paper), then import that image into BirdFont as a background and draw over it, tracing the letter shapes. BirdFont can import drawings from Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator, and export finished projects as TTF, EOT and SVG fonts. Step-by-step tutorials can be found on the official website.
